The internet is not a single system, but a layered environment where infrastructure, protocols, services, and people interact. This course explains how these layers connect and how cooperation between technical communities, governments, companies, and civil society helps maintain an internet that remains open, secure, and accessible to everyone.
The Internet Ecosystem is a living, collaborative framework driven by the processes that determine how the global internet is managed, designed, and coordinated. It helps explain the physical, logical, and application layers that seamlessly connect our world, while highlighting the multistakeholder model where governments, companies, technical experts, and civil society collaboratively shape policies and standards. In short, understanding the internet ecosystem reveals how we work together to keep the internet open, secure, and trustworthy for everyone.
This course was developed by the Internet Society (ISOC), a global nonprofit organization that promotes the open development, evolution, and use of the internet. ISOC works with communities, experts, and institutions around the world to support an internet that is open, globally connected, secure, and trustworthy.
